Edan and Paten Locke in Brooklyn

I missed this show, a couple folks I know said it was dope. As usual, the cats at grandgood.com did an excellent job documenting, however. Here's a clip where Edan rhymes incorporating mad records, while Paten flips through a couple stacks on stage. Just some simple, classic shit. There's a lot of dope hip-hop cats who put on wack shows, but there's those that really know how to rock.

Monthly Mixtapes - September Mix: Soundtracks

Monthly Mixtapes - September 2010 - Soundtracks (Download)

Here's a short mix of some of my favorite soundtrack selections. I'm not a big OST (original sound track - took me a couple years to figure that one out, admittedly) nerd, and don't own extensive crates of British and French television soundtracks. But it is very true that there's been some classic records (and samples) from films and tv shows. Often, from really bad, obscure movies and television - which makes those records harder to find. This mix does lean on the sample-heavy, breakbeat side of things - down the line I might do a mix of stuff from my favorite movies, like the theme to "The Third Man," but for now I figured it was time to feature some good music that have been sitting in the crates for awhile without any shine.

Good soundtracks create great atmosphere and feeling, and help tell the story or embellish a character or situation. Hopefully these selections give off some of that, whether or not you recognize them or know the movie they're attached to.

As a bonus, I did a short second mix of some of my favorite movie-associated hip-hop records. Nothing super rare on there, just classic joints I still love to play today.

No tracklisting this month. Quincy Jones is a genius, go check out his catalogue.

Interview with Seattle Producer Eardrumz

Interview with Seattle Producer Eardrumz

I've been a fan of Eardrumz for awhile, first hearing his beats on some of my dude Gabriel Teodros's material, and also on my man Replife's album. Finally got to meet him last year for a hot second at Hidmo in Seattle, and am late in getting to get a few words from him up on Everydaybeats. Check out all his stuff at www.eardrumz.net.

ian: give us a little history - who you are, when you started, where you're at, any of your favorite projects you've worked on.

eardrumz: My name is Geoff. With a "G." Taurus. I produce/DJ under the moniker of EarDr.Umz or EarDr.Umz The MetroGnome. Originally from Monterey, California, currently based in Seattle, but born and raised on the west coast of these "United" States.

Short Tribute to Fat Beats

Fat Beats.

I remember the first time I went to the legendary Fat Beats record store in New York City. Fairly typical of many indie hip-hop heads, I was a middle-class white kid who had just begun my freshman year at college in the NYC area. But before I even got to the Apple I knew about Fat Beats - the dude now known as Celph Titled had hyped it up to me over email. I had the address scrawled on a piece of paper in my pocket.

It was September 1996, and it was a hot, muggy day. I went into the city with a friend who was taking bass lessons from some jazz cat who lived on Avenue B. I bought a pina-colada Arizona iced tea and started walking. It's funny to think about now - I've walked all those blocks so many damn times - but it was all just a crazy maze of buildings and sun then, walking up 8th and 9th streets from the East Village to 6th Avenue.

The store - since moving from it's original location on 9th street - has been located above a 24-hour bagel shop for the last fourteen years. There's a crappy gate / door next to the bagel spot, and you gotta walk up a narrow stairway to enter. There would always be some signs posted of upcoming in-stores and new releases right outside the door to the spot.

I just remember the first time I walked in it was nothing like I'd ever scene. Vinyl. Everywhere. All hip-hop. Dozens of artists I'd never heard of. I had no idea where to start. The music was loud and hard, east coast beats, in-your-face intimidating. Welcome to New York.
